Levels of Qualification

New to Refereeing

Local Referee

This is the first offical step on the referee pathway. To become a locally qualified referee a candidate must complete the theory course, pass a simple test and be practically assessed.

CVA runs the theory component in conjunction with our hub referee schools. These are scheduled prior to Canterbury Juniors (November each year), Mainland Champs & Canterbury Seniors (February each year)

Required for:

Canterbury Junior Champs, all Senior High School Tournaments (Canterbury Champs, Mainland Champs, Satellite and New Zealand Senior School Championships) as well as the local Premier Volleyball League (Monday night) - Div 2 & 3.

Regional Referee

This is the next step on the referee pathway and is available to any fully qualified local referee. To become a regionally qualified referee a candidate must complete the theory course, pass the exam and be practically assessed in 1st and 2nd reffing and scoresheets. 

The content and format of this course is currently being updated.

Required for:

New Zealand Volleyball Championships (IPC), Southern Zone, NZ Club Nationals (Div 2 & Div 3), NZ Club Nationals (Div 1 - 2nd ref)

National Referee

This is a highest level of refereeing at a domestic level before stepping into International qualifications.  To become a nationally qualified referee a candidate must complete the theory course, pass the exam and pass several assesments. 

The course is provided by VNZ

Required for:

National Club Championships (Division 1)  and Senior IPC.
